Ancient Standing Buddha
The Aukana Buddha statue is a standing statue of the Buddha near Kekirawa in North-Central Sri Lanka. The statue, which has a height of more than 40 feet (12 meters), depicts the Buddha with a hand raised in reassurance, a variation of the Abhaya mudra. Dating back to the 5th century, this masterpiece is one of the best examples of ancient Sri Lankan sculpture.
Carved from a single granite rock face and still partially attached to the rock for support, the Buddha statue faces east, gazing toward the Kala-Wewa reservoir. The serene expression and perfect proportions showcase the remarkable skill of ancient artisans. The pedestal takes the form of a lotus flower, adding to the statue's spiritual symbolism.
